The Sardar Patel Stadium in Khammam has attained a
unique distinction of embracing solar energy in a big way to meet its
lighting needs. As many as 50 energy efficient solar
powered LED streetlights have been installed all along the nearly
900-metre-long walking track of the stadium recently. A
5-KW solar power pack has been installed in the stadium to harness
solar power to cater to varied lighting needs of the stadium, housing a
spacious walking track, administrative block and a host of sporting
facilities including shuttle badminton academy.

The
solar power pack system and 50 solar LED streetlights have been set up
in the stadium at an estimated cost of Rs.14.9 lakh under the Jawaharlal
Nehru National Solar Mission (JNNSM). The Sardar
Patel stadium in the town is the first stadium in the entire Telangana
to have such a big solar power system, says G.S.V. Prasad, District
Manager, the New and Renewable Energy Development Corporation of Andhra
Pradesh (NREDCAP).
Subsidy
The
Central government has extended Rs. 3.9 lakh subsidy under the JNNSM
and the remaining expenditure of the solar power pack encompassing 20
panels and 50 LED streetlights was borne by the Sports Authority of
Andhra Pradesh. The initiative will not only help conserve energy but save power bills and cope with power shortage, he asserts.
The
solar streetlights would be of immense help to the budding players of
various sports academies in the stadium as well as those who take stroll
on the walking track of the sports ground early in the morning and late
in the evening, remarks Sitaram, a resident of VDO’s colony.
