Organic Solar Cells will be more suitable for the Indian
environment than the traditional silicon solar cells, French solar
energy scientist Linda Cattin has said. He was delivering the keynote
address during the valedictory function of a three-day international
seminar on light, organised by the Laboratory for Molecular Electronics
and Photonics (LAMP) under the Department of Physics at the National
Institute of Technology, Calicut (NIT-C), on Friday.
Dr.
Cattin said that though silicon was one of the largest chemical
elements on earth, its processing was expensive. That was why solar
panels made of silicon were very costly and unaffordable to many, he
said. The production of organic solar cells, on the other hand, was
simple and less expensive. Though the manufacturing technology of
organic solar cells was presently facing different challenges,
researches in this direction were showing inspiring results of late, he
said.
He said that France, which traditionally
depended on nuclear energy for all its electricity requirements, was
also waking up to the possibilities of the technology by pumping in a
lot of funds.
