As many as 51 overbridges between
Chakeri (Kanpur) and Etawah on National Highway-2 will be fitted with
solar lights to facilitate safe night journey.
The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) had reportedly given the project to private company in 2013 to widen the highway with a package of Rs 2,000 crore under National Highway Development Programme (NHDP), fully funded by the Union ministry of road, transport and highways.
The 163-kilometre Kanpur-Etawah highway was to be widened to six lanes from present four-lane status. It was aimed to widen the road and to ease the traffic congestion on this particular stretch of National Highway-2.
The NHAI officials stated that the streetlights on the overbridges on highway are necessary and these would minimise the number of accidents. The overbridges will come up at Ekdil, Sarai Jalal, Bijauli, Ujhiyani, Sarai Narottam, Bheekhepur and Auraiya. Looking at the pace at which traffic is increasing, it is necessary to construct the overbridges. The width of the road is 28 feet that would make traffic movement smoother. Nearly 80% of work related to the widening of the road had already been completed. Process to install solar lights along the 163-km stretch of the highway from Etawah to Chakeri will begin soon in a phase-wise manner, he added. The streetlights are part of the Rs 2,000-crore road widening project.
NHAI is hopeful of completing the widening of National Highways (NH) 2 between Etawah and Kanpur by February 2015.
Progress of the project might slow down during the monsoon. The pending work will be completed after the rainy season, said Munna Singh, an official of the private company.
