At least 279 small renewable energy projects have been implemented in
Central America with the support of international cooperation, which
amount to about $ 25.8 million.
The projects range from solar energy, micro and small hydropower,
wind, bioenergy, and installing energy efficient stoves, among others. These projects were discussed Wednesday at the meeting for ‘Renewable
energy and sustainable development in Central America’ said the
Alliance for Energy and Environment for Central America (AEA) in a
statement. Regional authorities, international donors and project leaders
attended the meeting, said the AEA, which is part of the Central
American Integration System (SICA).
The Alliance said that these small renewable energy projects have
been implemented in the last 10 years funded by Finland, Austria and the
European Union (EU), which together contributed seed capital of 19
million euros (25.8 million dollars). In implementing these initiatives, they have involved the ministries
of Energy and Environment of the region, NGOs, private investors,
academic and research institutions and the rural communities who will
benefit.
The AEA noted that micro and small renewable energy projects have
benefited more than 38,000 people of rural populations and indigenous
groups in Central America. The meeting was held at a hotel in San Salvador and attended by the
ambassador of Finland to Central America and Mexico, Anne Lammila, and
the executive secretary of the National Energy Board of El Salvador,
Luis Reyes, among others.
