People across the state are likely to face more power cuts in the
next few days as coal shortage has hit the Vijayawada-based Vijayawada
Thermal Power Station (VTPS) and the Kadapa-based Rayalaseema Thermal
Power Project (RTPP), VSRK Ganapathi, chairman of the Vidyut JAC for the
Eastern Power Distribution Company of AP Limited (EPDCL), said on
Sunday.
The two key power-generation plants have already stalled generation
of power on Sunday because of the shortage of coal, particularly from
the Talcher coalfields of Odisha and Mahanadi Coalfields Limited in
Karnataka, according to Ganapathi.
“Nearly 600 MW of power was not generated on Sunday at the two plants
because of the shortage of the coal. The situation will worsen on
Monday evening and the entire power generation is likely to be stopped
if there is no improvement in the arrival of the coal. This will impact
the power supply to the domestic and industrial consumers falling under
Vizag-based EPDCL and Tirupathi-based SPDCL,” Ganapathi said.
If the two plants totally shut down operations, there will be no
generation of 2,810 MW of power (RTPP 1,050 MW in RTPP and 1,760 MW in
VTPS), Ganapathi explained.
The genco officials said that this was brought to the notice of chief
minister N Chandrababu Naidu on Sunday. The chief minister is to hold
an emergency meeting with the genco management on Monday at Hyderabad to
address the issue, official sources informed TOI.
