Dong Energy has upgraded turbines from 3.6MW to 4MW at the Borkum
Riffgrund 1 offshore wind project, boosting total capacity from 277MW
to 312MW.
The Danish company said the 78 machines at the scheme in the German
North Sea were being beefed up under a drive to cut the cost of
electricity. Rotor diameters on the turbines will not be changed. “The increased capacity of our wind farm will be another important
step to secure the supply from renewable energy sources and therefore
for the success of the German energy turnaround,” said Dong Energy
managing director for German offshore Trine Borum Bojsen.

“Apart from the improved production capacity of the turbine, the changes also include safety-related improvements.” The first foundations and transition pieces have already been
installed at the Borkum Riffgrund 1 construction site some 37km north of
the island of Borkum.
The first turbine will follow in the summer with installation of a suction bucket jacket demo also taking place this year. Dong said if the demo is successful, the suction bucket system could be “implemented in future commercial projects from 2017”.
